Classical Hollywood film sprung up in the 1920s and lasted until the mid to late 1960s. This type of cinema, now know as the â€Å"Golden Age of Hollywood,† had a very specific style. It used flashbacks, continuity editing as well as â€Å"narratives structured around the goals of individual characters† (Belton 44), also known as a deadline device. Stars of that era were chosen specifically to play the individual main characters and they had more traits than less involved characters, such as launching the main actions of the story. Verisimilitude, the appearance of being true or real, was an attribute aspired to be reached through the use of props, settings and dà ©cor. In addition, music and lighting were used to stimulate an emotional connection and/or response to the story. The film Casablanca is one of the greatest examples of the classical Hollywood era because it embodies everything the style entails, but especially the mise-en-scene, sound and lighting used t hroughout the film. Although America and Russia had been allies during the war against Nazi Germany, their alliance had always been one of necessity. Now that their common enemy had been defeated, they were able to focus their attentions on each other. America was a democratic, capitalist nation, and the Soviet Union was communist which meant that they were on opposing sides of the spectrum. The horror moviesof today may bring about a cheap scare, but to truly fear something is the sameas dying a thousand times over. All people have a worst fear, be it heights orducks, that an author or film maker can use to their advantage. Their goal is tomake the hairs on the back of ones neck raise, as well as have them lookingover their shoulder as the story progresses with more twists and turns than aroller coaster. The viewer begins to speculate as towhat they are running after, or more importantly, from. That instance of fearwas a letdown and also quickly forgotten, but the emotion was still presentnonetheless. A short ways into the film the viewer is introduced to an Indiannamed Magua, and through his speech and body movements it becomes noticeablethat he is concealing an ulterior motive, but the viewer can only wonder atwhat. Magua then acts as scout leading two women and a regiment of troopsthrough the woods it becomes clear that something is about to occur. As thesigns of impending action come ones pulse quickens and one may even leanforward in the seat in anticipation. The rising fear is rewarded as a group ofIndian braves attack them from the woods and then as the battle is happening onebegins to fear for the lives of the main characters that were only rece ntlyintroduced. In all predictability, they survive, but for a moment the viewer wasfearing the worst. As the group proceeds to the fort which is under attack fearis of course stirred to life. Not very strongly, but like a splinter in onesmind, it is always there. Through the film the fear for the lives of the maincharacters comes into play quite often as they are involved in manylife-threatening situations and whatnot but the real heart stopped comes at theend of the film. Magua has captured the two female characters and the Mohicansare racing up the mountain after him to save them. As they approach the peak,the Mohicans catch up, and a brutal fight ensues. Those feelings dwell from loneliness, something Holden Caulfield knows all about. Holden Caulfield, J.D. Salinger's main character in the book The Catcher In the Rye, is young man on the verge of having a nervous breakdown. One contributor to this breakdown, is the loneliness that Holden experiences. His loneliness is apparent through many ways including: his lack of friends, his longing for his dead brother, and the way he attempts to gain acceptance from others. Holden Caulfield is currently attending Pencey private school; well technically getting the boot from there for his poor academics, and this is his third school he has now been through. At Pencey, just as in the past two schools, Holden has troubles making friends. To Holden, everyone is either corny of phony. He used the term to describe what a person is if they don't act naturally and follow other people's manners and grace. Holden didn't like phonies, he thought of them as if they were trying to show off. He didn't like it when they showed off because it seemed so fake and unnatural every time they would do it. When Holden was on his way to the bar, he shared his insights about the piano player Earnie. ?Earnie's a big, fat, colored guy who plays the piano. He's a terrific snob and won't hardly talk to you unless you are a big shot or celebrity or something, but he can really play the piano. He's so good, he's almost corny in fact? (page 80). Also on page 126, he makes reference to Earnie's playing again. ?They [people outside the theater] acted a little bit the way old Earnie, down in the village, plays the piano. If you do something too good, then after a while if you don't watch it, you start showing off. And then you're not as good anymore.? Holden does not allow himself to have friendship because of his ?he is corny? attitude. Right away in the beginning of the book, the reader knows that Holden is lonely when he separates himself from the rest of the Pencey students by watching the football game from Thomsen Hill and not the grand stands. ?..you could hear them [students in grand stands] all yelling, deep and terrific on the Pencey side, because practically the whole school was there except me? (page 5). Holden wasn't a very sociable person partly because he finds himself better than many others. He dislikes his roommate because of his generic leather luggage. ?Its really hard to be roommates with someone if your luggage is better than theirs, it really is? (page 109), says Holden. He dislikes his roommate over something so insignificant as luggage. Holden sits in his room reading, cause he has no friends to be with. A kid named Ackely is his next door roommate, and he doesn't seem to want a friendship with him either. Holden finds Ackely's zit crusted face ridiculous and doesn't want him in his room at first. This should light a bulb in the readers head and signify internal problems with Holden and shows he has a lot of loneliness. Holden's loneliness is apparent in more than just him lacking friends. His loneliness shines through by the way he misses his deceased brother, Allie. Holden makes several references to Allie and how the two used to do stuff (page 38, 68, 98, 138, 140, 155, 198, 210). Holden deeply misses his brother and even talks to him out loud (page 98). I believe Holden misses his brother more than others because Holden never got that final closure to his brother's death; Holden never went to Allie's funeral, and so I believe that Holden didn't get to say his good-bye. What Holden did do though, is punch out all the windows in the garage the night of Allie's death. Over the last twenty years, a technological revolution has occurred as computers are now an essential element of today's society. Large computers are used to track reservations for the airline industry, process billions of dollars for banks, manufacture products for industry, and conduct major transactions for businesses because more and more people now have computers at home and at the office. People commit computer crimes because of society's declining ethical standards more than any economic need. According to experts, gender is the only bias. The profile of today's non-professional thieves crosses all races, age groups and economic strata. Computer criminals tend to be relatively honest and in a position of trust: few would do anything to harm another human, and most do not consider their crime to be truly dishonest. Most are males: women have tended to be accomplices, though of late they are becoming more aggressive. Computer Criminals tend to usually be between the ages of 14-30, they are usually bright, eager, highly motivated, adventuresome, and willing to accept technical challenges.(Shannon, 16:2) It is tempting to liken computer criminals to other criminals, ascribing characteristics somehow different from 'normal' individuals, but that is not the case.(Sharp, 18:3) It is believed that the computer criminal often marches to the same drum as the potential victim but follows and unanticipated path.(Blumenthal, 1:2) There is no actual profile of a computer criminal because they range from young teens to elders, from black to white, from short to tall. Definitions of computer crime has changed over the years as the users and misusers of computers have expanded into new areas. When computers were first introduced into businesses, computer crime was defined simply as a form of white-collar crime committed inside a computer system.(2600:Summer 92,p.13) Some new terms have been added to the computer criminal vocabulary. Trojan Horse is a hidden code put into a computer program. Logic bombs are implanted so that the perpetrator doesn't have to physically present himself or herself. (Phrack 12,p.43) Another form of a hidden code is salamis. It came from the big salami loaves sold in delis years ago. Often people would take small portions of bites that were taken out of them and then they were secretly returned to the shelves in the hopes that no one would notice them missing.(Phrack 12,p.44) Congress has been reacting to the outbreak of computer crimes. The U.S. House of Judiciary Committee approved a bipartisan computer crime bill that was expanded to make it a federal crime to hack into credit and other data bases protected by federal privacy statutes.(Markoff, B 13:1) This bill is generally creating several categories of federal misdemeanor felonies for unauthorized access to computers to obtain money, goods or services or classified information. This also applies to computers used by the federal government or used in interstate of foreign commerce which would cover any system accessed by interstate telecommunication systems. Computer crime often requires more sophistications than people realize it.(Sullivan, 40:4) Many U.S. businesses have ended up in bankruptcy court unaware that they have been victimized by disgruntled employees. American businesses wishes that the computer security nightmare would vanish like a fairy tale. Information processing has grown into a gigantic industry. It accounted for $33 billion in services in 1983, and in 1988 it was accounted to be $88 billion. (Blumenthal, B 1:2) All this information is vulnerable to greedy employees, nosy-teenagers and general carelessness, yet no one knows whether the sea of computer crimes is only as big as the Gulf of Mexico or as huge as the North Atlantic. (Blumenthal,B 1:2) Vulnerability is likely to increase in the future. And by the turn of the century, nearly all of the software to run computers will be bought from vendors rather than developed in houses, standardized software will make theft easier. (Carley, A 1:1) A two-year secret service investigation code-named Operation Sun-Devil, targeted companies all over the United States and led to numerous seizures. Critics of Operation Sun-Devil claim that the Secret Service and the FBI, which have almost a similar operation, have conducted unreasonable search and seizures, they disrupted the lives and livelihoods of many people, and generally conducted themselves in an unconstitutional manner.
